Austrian Development Cooperation

Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) supports countries in Africa, Asia and Central America as well as in South Eastern and Eastern Europe in their sustainable social, economic and democratic development. The Foreign Ministry (FMEIA) plans ADC strategies and programmes. The Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the operational unit of ADC, implements these together with public institutions, non-governmental organisations and enterprises.

Austrian multilateral ODA

The OECD Development Assistance Committee adopts a very narrow definition of multilateral official development assistance (ODA). To assure reliable statistics and avoid double counting, contributions to international organisations earmarked for certain regions or programmes are designated as bilateral ODA expenditure. Only general non-tied core budget contributions count as multilateral ODA. Austrian multilateral ODA is therefore not equivalent to expenditure from the so-called multilateral budgets for development cooperation (such as the budget for multilateral ADC in the Foreign Ministry’s Development Cooperation Department or the Finance Ministry budget for cooperation with international financial institutions).

Long-term trends and the detailed contributions of Austrian multilateral ODA are published in the ADC annual report.
