Contribution to IFRC Kenya Drought Emergency Appeal
Out of the total grant of Euro 800,000, approx. 35% (Euro 290,000) are being provided by the
Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW) and approx. 65% (Euro 510.000) by the Austrian Development Agency.
This initiative constitutes a contribution to the IFRC "Kenya Drought Emergency Appeal" launched in September 2009 to assist communities in Kenya affected by the current extreme drought caused by successive failure of rains.
The cumulative effects of three consecutive failed rain seasons and the effects of the 2008 post election violence in the agriculturally productive Rift Valley have crippled food production. According to the Kenyan Government, there is a 40 percent shortfall in national grain harvest in 2009.
The IFRC with its partner the Kenya Red Cross Society focuses on providing assistance and relief in the following sectors:
- food aid
- emergency health and care
- water, sanitation and hygiene promotion and
The assistance targets approx. 1,7 mio people who will be supported over a period of six months, i.e. from September 2009 to March 2010.
