HOPE for the People Affected by the Sahel Crisis: Emergency relief for Malian refugees and livelihood support for local pastoralists in Burkina Faso (Phase II)

Short Description:

Overall goal


The critical food and nutrition crisis, officially declared on 2 March 2012, by the Government of Burkina Faso remains alarming. Currently 170 rural communities are still at risk of food insecurity with very limited ability to prepare for the upcoming dry season in March 2013, even though this year’s rainy season brought enough rain to provide a temporary relief for the drought-weakened livestock. The situation is aggravated by a continuous influx of refugees from Mali most of them arriving in the Région du Sahel. As many refugees are not registered, the provision of an accurate number of refugees has been one of the biggest challenges faced by UNHCR; the current estimate is a total of 34.877 (as of 27 September 2012) with an estimated 10 families still arriving each week in Camp Damba.


The proposed action will benefit 17.800 people in the project area, i.e. 2.800 Malian refugees and 15.000 local agro-pastoralists

The main objectives of this project are to:

1. Continue to ensure the access of the affected refugee population to food and NFI in order to sustain and safeguard their lives, health and livelihood.

2. Continue to strengthen the resilience of refugees as well as of the local pastoralists and agro-pastoralists to cope with the current crisis and to support the livelihoods of the affected or potentially food-insecure households.

The results the intervention aims to achieve are:

1. Refugees in Camp Damba continue to be adequately protected against climatic and weather conditions by enhancing their shelter.

2. The survival of refugees in Camp Damba remains ensured by a humanitarian food and NFI assistance especially coping with the effects of the Harmattan season (November-February 2012).

3. The livelihood of the target group continues to be ensured throughout the Harmattan season and the upcoming dry season (March-June 2013), through domestic stockbreeding activities.
