Energy for Development
Vienna will attract the attention of energy experts in the upcoming months. At the regional meeting of the Global Forum on Sustainable Energy (GFSE) as well as at the Vienna Energy Forum 2011 heads of state, different national and international stakeholders, experts, civil society and actors of the private sector will discuss current issues in the field of energy. Austria with its headquarters of key international institutions in the field of energy is a hub for the exchange of cutting-edge ideas and expertise. In April and June the two high-level Forums will make Vienna the centre stage of global energy concerns.
Energy access as a key for development
While a third of the world population still lack access to reliable energy sources and services there is a common agreement that energy is central to economic, environmental, security, poverty, and developmental issues. Thus energy services are essential for achieving developing countries' aspirations to alleviate poverty and increase productivity, to enhance competitiveness and economic growth.
The Vienna Energy Forum 2011, co-organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Austrian Development Cooperation and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), will facilitate an international dialogue on providing universal energy access and on the multiple co-benefits of increasing energy efficiency.

21th-23th of June 2011
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy as the main targets
The actual energy challenges facing humanity stress the need of a sustainable usage of natural resources. Therefore Energy Efficiency (EE) and the share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) play a central role in establishing an enduring world energy system. This year´s regional meeting of the GFSE, a neutral multi-stakeholder platform, wants to enable a dialogue on identifying potentials and addressing barriers for EE and RES.

Time for action
For not letting the ideas and discussions be only a theoretical debate, the Vienna Energy Forum 2011 and the Regional Meeting of the GFSE want to examine specific mechanisms and best-practice as well as identify precise courses of actions. Therefore they want, amongst others, to agree on a common understanding of energy access as well as a strategy to ensure universal access to modern energy services and increase energy efficiency by reducing energy intensity by 40% until 2030, identify pathways for implementation of RES and EE projects in the framework of regional and cooperation strategies and advance the development of EE and RES governance at the regional level from an integral perspective.
