Partnership for the future
On September 8th, 2008, the Albanian Prime Minister Mr. Sali Berisha and the Austrian Minister for Education Ms. Claudia Schmied inaugurated the Albanian-Austrian High-School on Information Technology "Peter Mahringer" in Shkodra.
Modernization of vocational training
"This school for information technology will give a fresh impetus to vocational education in Albania", said the headmistress of the school, Ms. Gerlinde Tagini. The modernization of the vocational training structures in Albania is one of several priorities of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) in Albania. In order to introduce European Standards in the field of vocation training ADC supported the foundation of this high school, which is a joint initiative of the Albanian and Austrian Ministries of Education. Formation in Information Technology, a sector with great potential and prospects in Albania, is now provided in a formal way.
Increase the participation
Since the changing of Albanian social and economic system from a state driven and controlled to a more open market system, education and in particular Vocational Education and Training has suffered from lack of funds, lack of adequate policies. Since the end of the twentieth century and especially since the beginning of the twenty-first century Reform in Vocational Education has become more important for the Albanian government, aiming to increase the participation in the vocational education up to 40 percent, compatible with European countries.
Highest standards and modern facilities
Graduates from the Austrian School Shkodra obtain the Austrian as well as the Albanian school-leaving certificate. Subjects are taught in German and Albanian, but also English plays an important role in the educational concept of the school. The actual school building meets highest standards and is provided with modern facilities as well as a path breaking low energy concept granted by the Austrian Development Cooperation.
The School is one of six Austrian Schools abroad. The investments of approximately 1,3 Mil. Euro were borne by the Austrian Ministry of Education (EUR 1 Mio) and the Austrian Development Cooperation (EUR 250.000,-).
