Plassnik: "Aid for flood victims in Namibia"
Vienna, 21 April 2008 – "The flood victims in Namibia must be helped. Austria is therefore providing one hundred thousand euros in aid for the affected population," announced Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik today. The Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the organisation behind Austrian Development Cooperation, is currently examining how and in cooperation with whom this aid can be most effectively implemented.
Southern Africa has been suffering from heavy rainfalls since last October, with a total of one million people being affected. In the north of Namibia alone, in the region bordering Angola, at least 65,000 people are suffering from the consequences of massive flooding of the Cuvelai and Zambezi rivers.
Namibia is a partner country of Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC). Since the mid-nineties the main focus of support has been on the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, while the country’s democratic development has also been promoted. A showcase project is the development of a comprehensive judicial system for young people in the Hardap region which is regarded as a model that may serve as an example to other regions of Namibia.
