Spindelegger: "Trafficking in human beings violates the most fundamental human rights"
Federal Government adopts second National Action Plan
"Trafficking in human beings is a particularly crass violation of the most fundamental human rights. With the adoption of the second National Action Plan against trafficking in human beings we are making an important and specific contribution to combating this terrible crime," said Foreign Minister Spindelegger in his presentation, on 26th May 2009, to the Cabinet of the second Action Plan 2009-2011 to combat trafficking in human beings.
"It is also important for us to increase protection for the victims, particularly women and children, and to look after them in accordance with their needs. For example, training of members of the Austrian representative authorities to heighten awareness of this issue is an important way of identifying potential victims in their countries of origin," continued Spindelegger.
The Foreign Ministry Human Rights Task Force plays an important and effective coordinating role between the departments concerned, the provinces, victim protection associations and non-governmental organisations. The second Action Plan elaborated by the Austrian Human Rights Task Force contains measures for prevention, victim protection, prosecution and international cooperation. It will be implemented in close collaboration with civil society.
