Hintergrundinformation

Regional governance of food and nutrition security has been strengthened in recent years. Regional food crisis prevention and forecasting instruments as well as the solidarity promoted by the Food Crisis Prevention Network are now a reality. The Cadre harmonisé 4 (CH – Harmonised Framework) was rolled out for the first time in all 17 countries for the 2015-2016 campaign and the

Regional Food Security Reserve project is in the start-up phase. Moreover, the region now has new support instruments for food and nutrition security including the 5th band (35%) of the Common External Tariff to protect strategic food production and the Alliance for a climate-smart agricultural framework in 2015.

However, food and nutrition is still a major concern in the Sahel and West Africa. Regardless of the status of the agro-pastoral campaign, each year three to four million people – mostly women and children – require food and nutrition assistance.
