Developing post-release opportunities for women and girl prisoners - Extension to provinces (AFG/S47 Phase II)
The project builds on the UNODC work on developing post-release opportunities for women and girl prisoners under the project AFG/S47 launched in 2006. Under this project UNODC aims to further substantively upgrade the situation of women and girls prisoners in the country and extend the project
activities to selected provinces with a focus on the social reintegration of female offenders, comprising rehabilitation during imprisonment and post-release support. The project forms part of the larger UNODC Criminal Justice Reform Programme, ongoing in Afghanistan since 2003.
The current project aims to extend the activities to three selected provinces, where the presence of women in prison is significant (e.g. Mazar, Herat, Kandahar). The project will develop and implement practical short-term interventions in order to address the social reintegration needs of women and girls in prison, whereas a comprehensive national policy and strategy for the effective resettlement of female offenders for implementation will be supported for the long-term.
