Food Security Initiative for Poor Women
The rural areas of the West Bank have been among the most affected by the deteriorating economic situation resulting from the building of the Barrier and a system of closures that has restricted the mobility of people and products. Many rural communities have become socially and economically isolated, thereby sinking further into poverty. This effect is felt particularly in the northern West Bank, in the Qalqilya district and in the southern West Bank in the southern Hebron district, where poverty levels are above average, reaching 75% and food insecurity reaches levels above 40%. Rural women and their children are among the hardest-hit groups and with the continuing deterioration of the situation, are rapidly becoming more insecure. This project will help the women in these areas by mobilizing them into groups and building their capacities in food processing, with a particular emphasis on dried local fruit products, which also serves to manufacture surplus agriculture products that cannot be transported/marketed. The project will, further, seek to promote the use of these food products in school feeding initiatives, to promote the nutrition of children and their academic achievement.
