Honeybees in the Himalayas - Promoting Partnerships with Rural Development Organizations in the Region
The project is a continuation of a programme funded by the Austrian Development Co-operation since 1993. With the current phase the project moves from research to applying the research for poverty reduction and environmental conservation.
The overall objective of the proposed project is "to improve the livelihoods of rural mountain people and conserve biodiversity". The main purpose of the project is "to strengthen partnerships with rural development organizations, technical institutions and international agencies in promoting sustainable management of honeybees to contribute to income of mountain women & men". A total of nine major areas were identified during the planning process including partnership development, capacity building, awareness raising, networking, Apis cerana selection and management, pollination and eco-services of wild honeybees, marketing and enterprise development and gender mainstreaming.
This innovative module of development envisages organizing a partnership of CBOs, country focal technical institutions, rural development organizations and ICIMOD. The proposed module will also crosscut through and will benefit from international actors and players of development in the field of honeybees. The project will be hosted in the ICIMOD's action initiative "High Value Products and Sustainable Agriculture" under the ARID program. It will be implemented in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan. The project has a very strong component of gender mainstreaming, which will benefit directly and indirectly in achieving the equitable empowerment of women and men.
