Safer and Healthier Lives for Children in Monastic Institutions in Bhutan
The ongoing Religion and Health project 2005-00-2005 will come to end by January 2007. This project is going on well and by the end of 2006, the access to water and sanitation facilities will have been increased from 65% to 75% (10 new schemes built); existing water and sanitation facilities are all functioning; all water caretakers are skilled, maintenance committees are active, Monks have the knowledge and skills on health, hygiene, child protection, HIV/AIDS behaviors, and regularly advocating on these issues among people in the community.
However, there are still many Monastic Institutions which need such assistance. According to the official sources there are about 1700 Monasteries, 15 Shedras (Buddhist Colleges), 9 Nunneries and 130 Lobdras (Schools). This project for "Safer and Healthier Lives for Children in the Monastic Institution in Bhutan" aims at improvement in the living conditions in 10 more Monastic Institutions (including two nunneries). The Project involves provision of Water Supply and sanitation facilities for both monasteries and nunneries. Further training of monks and nuns on health & hygiene, Protection issues and HIV/AIDS are some of the core activities in the project.
An external evaluation will be carried out by the end of the project.
