Austria's relations with Uganda go back to the early 1980s. Since then, the two countries have experienced close development cooperation and lively cultural exchange with the involvement of government institutions, civil society organizations and many dedicated individuals. In 1991, Austria established a coordination office for development cooperation in Kampala. Since 1993, Uganda has been a priority country for Austrian Development Cooperation. Total bilateral ODA of Austria to Uganda between 1994 and 2012 amounted to 158 million EUROS and focused mainly on two sectors: Water and Sanitation, and Rights, Justice and Peace.

The review of the current Uganda Country Strategy of the Austrian Development Cooperation 2010 – 2015 assessed the relevance, impact and the effectiveness of its strategic focus, the efficiency and the sustainability of its implementation and provides important input for the elaboration of Austria's next Uganda Country Strategy.
