Due to its persistent weak economy, the situation in the Republic of Moldova has not improved very much in recent years and poverty remains a widespread problem. The government is seeking to reduce poverty through rural and regional development measures, administrative reforms and improvements to the business climate. The Austrian Development Agency is supporting the republic in these efforts.
UNITED AGAINST POVERTY
The Republic of Moldova has been a priority country of Austrian Development Cooperation since 2004. Austria’s cooperation with the country is based on its bilateral country strategy for 2016-2020 and the EU Strategic Framework. Its express goals are to reduce poverty and create new prospects for people in rural areas. In addition to Austrian funds, ADA also administers EU aid. It concentrates its activities on projects in water supply and wastewater disposal, environmental protection and climate change and in economic development and employment promotion. A particular concern is vocational training to enable young people to find better qualified work and make a future in their home country. Emigration – especially rural exodus – is a major issue in Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe. The most important source of employment in Moldova, agriculture, yields little income. ADA attaches particular importance to promoting projects that impart training in agriculture or assist farmers in raising yield.
