Objective

The project seeks to create a movement of Africans and global citizens which recognize African women as agents of change and promote their engagement and participation as key in achieving Africa's transformation and development.


Expected results


Expected Results

- A culture of communicating change in which media portrays African women as agents of change, role models and key in Africa's transformation and development:

outreach to 150 Media Houses through programme + additional 20 media houses through Communications in UNWOMEN HQ in NY + 10 partnerships with private sector

- Enhanced capacities of women and availability of safe spaces to showcase their contribution to development and their key role towards achieving Africa's Agenda 2063:

approx. 500.000 young women and girls in Africa + 100.000 young women and girls through UNWOMEN national committees, 200.000 women of the women's movement, 5000 - 7000 men through He for She campaign

- Availability and use of social platform and brand on women as agents of change in development by women and human rights, journalists and the wider media landscape

- Capacity Development of Ethiopian and Africa based media in reporting from a gender sensitive perspective

- Cooperation with the private sector (eg. Ethiopian Airlines) to raise awareness and recognition of contribution of women to sustainable development in Africa among non traditional audience (eg. Airline passengers)

- Organizing high visibility events poromting gender equality and women's empowerment (

f.ex African Women Movie Days in Addis Abeba, Movie night CSW NY 2016 etc

- Strenghten institutional and technical capacities for ETH Airlines to develop and implement gender policy based on UNWOMEN/Global Compact


Context


Background

The decision of the African Union (AU) for a dedicated "Year of Women's Empowerment and Development towards Africa's Agenda 2063" in 2015 sends a strong signal of commitment to gender equality by Memberstates and creates an opportunity for the acceleration and realization of the commitments made to African women's rights and empowerment, gender equality,and inclusive development. In order to highlight the contribution by African women to sustainable devlopment the programme will - among others - provide a platform for the mobilization of a movement towards a revised and positive narrative from and about African Women and for information sharing of stories of impact by and for women.

  • Type of Aid – Aid modalities: classifies transfers from the donor to the first recipient of funds such as budget support, core contributions and pooled programmes and funds to CSOs and multilateral organisations, project-type interventions, experts and other technical assistance, scholarships and student costs in donor countries, debt relief, administrative costs and other in-donor expenditures.
  • Purpose/ sector code: classifies the specific area of the recipient’s economic or social structure, funded by a bilateral contribution.
  • Tied/Untied: Untied aid is defined as loans and grants whose proceeds are fully and freely available to finance procurement from all OECD countries and substantially all developing countries. Transactions are considered tied unless the donor has, at the time of the aid offer, clearly specified a range of countries eligible for procurement which meets the tests for “untied” aid.
