Assistance Food Aid in Sudan 2007

Contract partner: ICRC - International Committee of the Red Cross - Switzerland Country: Sudan Funding amount: € 400.000,00 Project start: 01.01.2007 End: 31.12.2007

Short Description:

Overall goal

The security and humanitarian situation in Darfur has continued to deteriorate. The ongoing conflict, combined with a sharp rise in levels of criminality, banditry, tribal infighting and the splintering of armed groups into rival factions, has continued to destabilize the region.

Gereida is now the largest IDP camp in Darfur, home to more than 125,000 people, the majority of whom are women and children. The number of IDPs amounts to around three to four times the population of Gereida town, thereby placing a huge strain on local resources, which are vastly insufficient to meet the needs of both resident and IDP populations. Due to an escalation of violence against civilians in the area, the camp population has more than doubled in size over the past year. Such rapid growth has led to potentially enormous health risks, with tens of thousands of people living in extremely basic conditions.

The ICRC carried out monthly food distributions in Gereida camp from August 2004 to August 2006, when this activity was taken over by another aid agency. Since this agency has suspended its operations in the camp owing to security concerns, the ICRC has had to resume responsibility for this task. In order to ensure the survival of the especially vulnerable people in Gereida, the ICRC needs to mobilize and distribute 9,332 metric tons (MT) of sorghum, 3,055 MT of red split lentils, 1,226,000 litres of groundnut oil and 527 MT of sugar. In line with these requirements, the Austrian contribution will assist the provision of food aid in Gereida camp, thereby contributing to the provision of full food rations on a monthly basis to 125,000 people.

The project is based on the ICRC Budget Extension Appeal for Sudan from March 20, 2007.
