The project will directly benefit 24,532 persons (55% women, 3% people with disabilities, and 58% internally displaced people). The target groups include vulnerable resident households, IDPs (new and old), children of school age, pregnant and breastfeeding women, children aged 6 to 23 months.

The project targets the municipalities of Djibo and Dori (Sahel) and the municipality of Kaya (Center North) in Burkina Faso.

Activities

Education in Emergency: construction and equipment of 6 classrooms, establishment of reception areas for children, tutoring courses, medical consultations in schools, upgrading of schools to disability inclusion standards, provision of scholarships, distribution of feminine hygiene kits.

Water and sanitation (WASH): drilling of 4 boreholes, rehabilitation of a water tower, community awareness sessions and organization of a play, construction of family and community latrines, distribution of hygiene kits.

Food security and nutrition: distribution of coupons / vouchers, direct distribution of food, nutritional assistance and pharmaceutical products for young, malnourished children and pregnant and breastfeeding women, material support, awareness sessions on infant nutrition.

Disaster preparedness: emergency support in the event of a crisis.

Livelihood: provision of cash for work, provision of installation kits for young people willing to start their own small business, support to women for farming activities.

Context

The security context in the Sahel is deteriorating, basic social services are disrupted, access both to markets and financial services is restricted, and the COVID-19 crisis puts further stress on the system. As a result, the situation of people in need living or finding refuge in the project areas has become extremely critical, increasing their dependence on humanitarian aid. Burkina Faso has more than a million IDPs, while more than 150 health centers are not functioning, 3,500 schools are closed, food insecurity prevails and access to water and sanitation is insufficient.
