Ziel des Nothilfe-Projektes, das im Dorf Turbi in der Diözese Marsabit durchgeführt wird, ist die Verbesserung der Nahrungssicherheit der am meisten benachteiligten der dort lebenden 311 Pastoralisten-Familien des Stammes der Gabbra. Seit 2004 hat es in Marsabit kaum mehr geregnet. Die Niederschläge sind 2005 fast komplett ausgefallen. Durch diese extreme Dürrekatastrophe und auch durch daraus resultierende Konflikte in der Region wurde der Viehzuchtbestand der Nomaden dermaßen reduziert, dass die Subsistenz und das Überleben ohne Nahrungsmittelhilfe von außen nicht mehr gesichert sind. Unterernährung vor allem der Kinder sowie die Abhängigkeit von Hilfe von außen durch das Wegfallen der Lebensgrundlage der Pastoralisten sind die Probleme, die das Projekt lindern soll. Während eines im Juli durchgeführten Assessments der Partnerorganisation und eines Vor-Ort-Besuchs der Leiterin der Katastrophenhilfe der Caritas Österreich bezeichnete die Zielgruppe die Aufstockung des Viehbestandes durch Milchkamele als das vordringlichste Anliegen. Durch den Ankauf von 360 Stück Kamelen und deren Verteilung an die am meisten benachteiligten Familien (v.a. alleinstehende Frauen, child headed households) sollen insgesamt 175 Familien wieder diese Lebensgrundlage erhalten. Die begünstigten Familien werden nach Kriterien der sozialen Bedürftigkeit durch das Dorfältestenkomitee ausgewählt. Ein Kamel gibt durchschnittlich 5 l Milch pro Tag für den Familienbedarf - diese soll einerseits der eigenen Ernährung dienen, andererseits auch verkauft werden, um den Ankauf anderer lebensnotwendiger Lebensmittel oder non food items zu ermöglichen. 10 Stück Kamele werden der örtlichen Schule übergeben und die Ernährung der 251 Schulkinder, darunter 86 Waisenkinder, während des Schulbesuches sichern.
