Context

The target region is currently highly affected by a succession of drought events. SCORE’s assessment findings indicate that the performance of the last Ganna main rainy season from March to May of 2017 was much below normal. Rainfall cessation time was early by nearly 2 months. Pasture for pastoralist livestock is critically short. Land was cultivated very late in all woredas due to the highly erratic nature of rainfall, and the already low body condition of oxen. Almost no crop production will be possible. More than 700 hectares of maize and 600 hectares of sorghum were destroyed by fall army worm infestation (FAW) in this season. While some water sources were replenished by rainfall, this presented only short-lived relief. Consequently, in some woredas like Dillo water rationing has started and most Borana woredas are expected to need water interventions within a short period of time.
