Communal Integrated Erosion Risk Management (Armenia)
Short Description:
Overall goal
ADA contributes to the regional programme ”Integrated Erosion Control in the South Caucasus“. ADA finances the Armenia country component, while BMZ finances the Georgia and Azerbaijan country components. Erosion has increased in the high mountains of the South Caucasus due to unsustainable pasture management and deforestation. The project will be implemented in the provinces of Aragatsotn and Shirak. In particular, the following results are expected: -) Erosion risks, pasture erosivity and biological degradation are assessed. The capacity in terms of assessment methods of Armenian partners has been increased. -) Integrated erosion control measures are implemented in 6 communities, including afforestation of 200 ha on degraded land. Up to 300 local people will be directly trained in afforestation techniques. The measures serve as examples for the four northern provinces of Aragatsotn, Tavush, Lori and Shirak, comprising more than 800,000 people. -) Incentives for implementing integrated erosion control measures are developed and support local livelihoods of up to 3,000 households, -) Regional exchange on integrated erosion control measures in high mountain areas in the South Caucasus is established, including scientific cooperation. The Ministry of Territorial Administration is the main political partner of the project, while the Ministry of Agriculture and NGOs, such as ATP and SDA are implementation partners. At the sub-national level, the project is cooperating with community administrations (Marzpetaran).
