Short Description:

Overall goal


Aligned to the COVID-19 National Preparedness and Response Plan, the overall objective of the intervention is to enhance the health sector’s capacity in early preparedness of a potential endemic outbreak of COVID-19 in Bhutan. While the Bhutanese Government took very early and tight measures to contain the possible spread of COVID 19 it is not prepared for a major outbreak and lacks advanced ICU ventilators and personal protective equipment such as coverall tyveks.

1. Effective containment of COVID-19 pandemic

2. Reduced negative impact on the delivery of primary health care services in Bhutan.


Target group / Beneficiaries


The intervention is expected to directly benefit 4217 persons:

-) 3,992 health care professionals with 109 specialists, 116 General Duty Medical Officers, 3,367 nurses and 400 laboratory technicians placed in the four Case Management Centres and three diagnostic facility networks.

-) 225 intensive care patients in case of a COVID-19 outbreak.


Activities


1. Purchase and distribution of 10,000 coverall white Tyvek for the three isolation wards;

2. Purchase and distribution of 12 advanced ICU Ventilators (MV 2000- EVo 5);

3. Procurement of medical masks or other standardised medical equipment, if required and available on the market, and as according to COVID 19 situation in country (alarm level).

 


Context


Following the confirmation of the first novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) case in Bhutan on 5 March 2020, the Government activated the National Preparedness and Response Plan with a total budget of EUR 48 Mio and swiftly set up quarantine, test and isolation centres preceded by screening of all entrants at every border checkpoint and airport.
