Short Description:

Overall goal


Promoting sustainable peace through greater participation of women in efforts to prevent and counter violent extremism and community conflicts in the G5 Sahel region. The project envisages to prevent violent extremism and protect women’s rights through the enhancement of women’s leadership and gender responsive approaches to security-sector reform in four G5 Sahel countries.

 


Expected results


- A conducive environment to the implementation of commitments and norms on women, peace and security is strengthened at national and regional level;

- Women’s civil society groups are capacitated to engage in strategies to prevent extremist violence and promote social cohesion.

 


Target group / Beneficiaries


2 230 women as direct beneficiaries of the project.

30 000 members of the community will be targeted by different sensitizations and campaigns on peace and preventing violent extremism (indirect beneficiaries).

 


Activities


- Support the G5 Sahel for the elaboration of its gender strategy;

- Organize regional trainings on conflict analysis and conflict prevention including violent extremism;

- Organize regular community dialogues on social cohesion and preventing conflicts in 2 hot regions in each country;

- Organize simultanously in all countries of the G5 Sahel a regional campaign of women against conflict;

- Women networks in the 4 countries organize quarterly think tanks and open debates on security situation and conflict prevention and send early warning messages to key stakeholders at the regional and national Levels.


Context


This program is in perfect line with the G5 Sahel Strategy for Deve¬lopment and Security and its Action Plan. The Declaration on Countering Radicalization and Violent Extremism in the Sahel, adopted by the G5 Sahel Heads of State in May 2015, explicitly acknowledged the crucial role of women in combating the spread of violent extremism. It will contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel (UNISS) and its Sahel Support Plan, all of which recognize the primordial role women have to play in restoring peace and stability in the Sahel region. It is in line with the UN Plan of Action on the prevention of violent extremism, UN Security Council resolutions 1325 and followings, the SDGs 5 and 16.

It is also aligned with the Austrian Development Cooperation’s priority on ensuring peace and human security, human rights and migration.
