Projects
Contribution to UNICEF's Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) in Syria 2019
Short Description:
Overall goal
This project contributes to improved access to water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), health and nutrition services for conflict-affected children and their families.
Expected results
Result 1: Provide emergency life-saving WASH facilities and services for affected people including in camps, health centers, IDP centers, collective shelters.
Result 2: Limited restoration of existing municipal drinking water and sanitation supply systems in the most vulnerable communities.
Target group / Beneficiaries
Humanitarian partners estimate 13.1 million people in need (PiN) of humanitarian assistance, including about 5 million children.
As per the Humanitarian Response plan 2019 UNICEF plans to reach 5 million people with WASH interventions (including 2 million children.)
In line with UNICEF's Humanitarian Action for Children 2019 and the Humanitarian Response plan 2019 Austria's contribution to UNICEF of EUR 1 million could reach up to 150,000 conflict-affected people with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene interventions.
Of these 150,000 vulnerable, conflict-affected and displaced people, 60,0000 are estimated to be children.
UNICEF works with NGOs and faith-based organizations (including the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch, Syria Al Yamama Charity Association) with private sector companies and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC).
The UNICEF program is implemented in 7 Governorates (Rural Damascus, Tartous, Dar’a, As Sweida, Quneitra, Deir Zor and Al Hassakeh).
Activities
Activities may include:
- Emergency repairs of WASH infrastructure to increase resilience of IDP host communities, e.g. repair of damaged water pipes, rehabilitation of ground water wells (for contingency water supplies), and repair of damaged electro-mechanical equipment in pumping stations.
- Hygiene and sanitation promotion in areas densely populated by IDPs, e.g. through hygiene promotion campaigns, garbage clean ups in IDP camps, provision of soap and essential hygiene items.
- Emergency life-saving WASH response for displaced populations including water trucking, water disinfectant, installation and maintenance of emergency latrines etc.
Context
In 2019, the Syria Crisis enters its eighth year and remains a major protection and humanitarian crisis. Humanitarian partners estimate 11.7 million people in need (PiN) of humanitarian assistance, including about 5 million children (1.3 million children under-5 and 3.7 million children 5 to 17 years old). An estimated 6.2 million people remained internally displaced, with well over 1.6 million population movements recorded between January and December 2018. About 40 per cent of the 11.7 million PiN are in areas of major need and continue to rely on humanitarian assistance as a critical lifeline to avert a deterioration in their situation. In 2019, the situation in Syria is likely to remain complex and dynamic. Hostilities and insecurity are expected to continue particularly in the North West and North East areas of the country, which is expected to trigger additional civilian displacement.
