Emergency Food Support for Flood-Affected Populations in Mozambique

Contract partner: WFP - World Food Programme Country: Mosambik Funding amount: € 100.000,00 Project start: 01.02.2008 End: 31.12.2008

Short Description:

Overall goal

While still recovering from the devastating floods of early 2007, Mozambique has again been experiencing a major flood emergency in the centre of the country since late December 2007. These floods are the consequence of high levels of rainfall in Mozambique since late December 2007, compounded by persistent heavy rains in neighboring countries (Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi).

The GoM, through coordination by the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) at national,

provincial and district levels, is leading the emergency response with support from the humanitarian

community present in Mozambique. INGC has specifically requested help from WFP to provide emergency assistance to the flood victims.

The overall objective of this project is to ensure that 258,000 people, identified to be directly affected by the current flood situation in central Mozambique, receive appropriate and adequately nutritious food in a timely manner, so as to prevent a severe deterioration of food security and nutritional status.

WFP plans to purchase approximately 16,470 tons of mixed food commodities to cover the immediate and medium term needs of those 258,000 flood-affected people.

This project between ADA and WFP represents a contribution to the WFP "Emergency Food Support for Flood-Affected Populations - PRRO 10600.0" .
