Emergency shelter and disaster preparedness assistance in Nepal

Short Description:

Overall goal


The overall goal of the project is to contribute to effective and efficient emergency assistance in order to improve the living conditions and resilience of the earthquake-affected population in Nepal. The Austrian Red Cross with its partner, the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), aims to improve the immediate (temporary) shelter situation in target areas and to inhance people's preparedness for future disasters.


Expected results


The project aims to reach the following results:

- 15,000 families have increased capacities to cope with challenging shelter conditions.

- Preparedness of NRCS for future disasters in the target areas has increased by prepositioning 2,000 family kits in target-area warehouses.


Target group / Beneficiaries


The targeted districts of this proposal are Sindhupalchowk, Dhading and Sindhuli , all three of which are among the most severely affected 14 districts in Nepal. In these three districts, a total of 15,000 of the most vulnerable households are being supported with emergency shelter and household items.


Activities


More conretely,

- 4,000 families will be provided with the emergency shelter toolkit comprising of 2 tarpaulins (woven plastic, 4x6m) and 1 shelter kit (shovel, heel, saw, fixings...) each as well as with information, education and communication (IEC) materials on emergency shelter constructions.

- Further 9,000 families will receive 2 tarpaulins. Either as a first set of emergency shelter material or to have additional material to cope with the current situation (affected families, who have received tarpaulins in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake are in need of additional material for roofing off against heavy rains, constructing latrines, sealing of water collection points).

- Further 2.000 vulnerable families will receive a kitchen set comprising of pots, pan, plates, cups, bowl, knives, forks and spoons to provide cooking utensils, which were lost in damaged or destroyed houses.


Apart from that, 2,000 family kits will be procured for replenishing stocks in warehouses, thus involving a greater variety of goods (2 tarpaulins, 2 blankets, cloth, clothing, kitchen utensils, buckets, ropes).

 


Context


The earthquake on the 25th April 2015 and several aftershocks have impacted 57 of Nepal´s 75 districts. More than 8,800 people have been confirmed dead and at least 17,900 injured. In addition to loss of life and human suffering, the earthquakes have caused extensive destruction and damage to infrastructure, housing and livelihoods leading to a drastic reduction in living conditions, income and access to basic services. More than 1,124m families (5,6m people) have been affected. At least 543,000 houses are destroyed and further 310,000 damaged (IFRC Operations update no 5) .
