Ecuador ist das zweitärmste Land Lateinamerikas. 15% der Bevölkerung leben unter der Armutsgrenze und müssen mit einem Dollar pro Tag ihr Auslangen finden, wobei die ländliche Bevölkerung am stärksten betroffen ist. Wasserknappheit ist ein zentrales Problem, das aufgrund der schlechten Hygienebedingungen zu gesundheitlichen Beschwerden führt. Ebenso beeinträchtigt der Wassermangel die Qualität der Nacherntebehandlung des Kaffees.


Die H & H Tee und Kaffee Import GmbH & Co KG (Fa. Heissenberger) bezieht und röstet schon seit drei Jahren Biokaffee aus Ecuador und produziert den "Ja!Natürlich"-Biokaffee des Rewe-Austria Konzerns. Heissenberger und "Ja!Natürlich" führten bereits in den Jahren 2005 und 2006 Initiativen zur Verbesserung der Situation von Kleinbäuerinnen und -bauern und deren Familien in der Region Loja durch und möchten nun die Bevölkerung auf breiterer Basis unterstützen. Heissenberger ist an einer langfristigen Vermarktungsbeziehung mit FAPECAFES, dem regionalen Verband für kleinbäuerliche Produktion, interessiert, für die eine hochwertige Produktqualität unabdingbar ist. Als weiterer Partner wird die NRO HORIZONT3000 eingebunden, die bereits langjährige Erfahrung in den Bereichen Organisationsentwicklung und Gesundheit/Ernährung in Ecuador hat.


Ziel ist die dörfliche Organisationsentwicklung und Verbesserung der Kaffeequalität, die an Hand des Wassermanagements in ausgewählten Gemeinschaften in der Region um Palanda und Alamor durch FAPECAFES gewährleistet wird. Das Projekt sieht die Installierung eines Wasserversorgungssystems zusammen mit öffentlichen Akteuren und die Konstituierung eines Gremiums zur Führung und Wartung des Systems vor.
