Financial Assistance to the Legal Education Scholarship Programme
Short Description:
Overall goal
Over the past years, Austria has been giving support to the International Law Institute - Uganda, Centre for Legal Excellence with the aim of building the capacity of lawyers in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA), who have often received insufficient training concerning practical skills thus rendering SSA-lawyers in a disadvantaged position compared to their Western counterparts. An external evaluation of the ILI, recently commissioned by the ADC, has underlined the importance of this training institution but, however, at the same time pointed out the continuing need for financial support. With this new project Austria is funding 78 scholarships for 13 different post graduate courses on commercial and governance subjects broadly related to private sector development as well as the strengthening of good governance and the rule of law. As a new component - compared to the two previous programs - 4 courses in French language with a focus on conflict resolution and peaceful coexistence, specifically targeted for Rwanda and Burundi, will be introduced.
