Humanitarian Assistance to vulnerable population affected by food crisis and floods in Diffa Region, Niger
Short Description:
Overall goal
In 2012, a food crisis hit more than 5.5 million people in Niger. This crisis was due to a food and animal fodder production deficit, caused by insufficient rain, pests and by the closing of the border with Nigeria, which also limited the possibilities to import food. In addition, in October 2012, the Komadougou Yobe river which borders the main cities of Diffa region in the southeast of Niger, has experienced a historical rise of up to 400 cm. The overflow destroyed many houses and farms with irrigation cultivation and affected a total of 8.040 persons in the communes of Diffa, Chetimari, Bosso Gueskerou and Maine Soroa.
This project therefore aims to reduce the impact of the food crisis and floods on 10.500 vulnerable individuals from 1.500 households, in eight communes of the Diffa region.
This goal will be reached through a two-pronged approach:
1. Increase the access to food and non-food items for 1.500 vulnerable households affected by the food crisis and floods in the targeted communes of the project through Cash For Work and unconditional cash and Non Food Items distribution
2. Enhance the resilience of the targeted population to food and nutrition crisis through the establishment and/or reinforcement of food security stocks, early warning systems and community capacity building.
