Improving Post-Release Opportunities for Women Prisoners in Afghanistan
UNODC in Afghanistan is engaged in a series of large-scale projects aimed at improving both the penal system and the conditions under which prisoners are held. One such project is to build a new correctional premise for women prisoners in Kabul; In this context, there is significant scope for developing project activities that aim to improve the conditions of women (including those with small children) currently within prison, including education and training activities that provide greater opportunities for re-integration into communities. In addition, the project seeks to create new opportunities for women on their release, including issues such as vocational training and assisting in the establishment of housing when released women are prevented from returning to their families. The project will be implemented in conjunction with the UNODC and UNIFEM offices in Kabul.
