Overall goal


Das Naturschutzgebiet "Esperanza Verde" liegt im Süden Nicaraguas. Es ist Teil des Naturparks "Los Guatusos" im Biosphärenreservat "Río San Juan". Der Kauf dieses Gebietes wurde im Jahr 1994 im Rahmen des Unterstützungsprogramms der Österreichischen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit für das System der Naturschutzgebiete im Südosten Nicaraguas (SI-A-PAZ) finanziert.


Da die Kosten für das Management und den Schutz dieses Naturparks sehr hoch sind, hat die Stiftung FUNDEVERDE die Initiative zur Gründung eines ökologisch nachhaltigen und wirtschaftlich rentabeln Betriebs, der eine regelmäßige Einkommensquelle garantieren kann, ergriffen. Bereits vor einigen Jahren wurde die Machbarkeitsstudie für die "Vermehrung des Grünen Leguans im Naturschutzgebiet Esperanza Verde" durchgeführt. Diese Studie hatte zum Ziel, die ökologische und ökonomische Nachhaltigkeit einer Vermehrung der Grünen Leguane (Iguana iguana) in Gefangenschaft festzustellen; die Ergebnisse der Studie bestätigten, dass es möglich und wirtschaftlich rentabel ist, diese Tiere zu vermehren, um sie dann im Südosten des Landes wieder in die Wildnis auszusetzen bzw. für kommerzielle Zwecke zu nutzen.


Durch den Verkauf von Einzeltieren sollen Einnahmen erzielt werden, die eine dauerhafte Deckung der Managementkosten des Naturschutzgebiets Esperanza Verde gewährleisten und damit die Spendenabhängigkeit vermeiden sollen.
