Seit 1978 sind Teams der Universität Innsbruck an Forschungsgrabungen an der historischen Stadt Borsippa, ca. 115 km südlich von Bagdad, beteiligt. Bis Oktober 2003 wurden auch in Kriegssituationen die Grabungen weitergeführt, dass sie jetzt wiederaufgenommen werden sollen, ist ein Zeichen für die "Normalisierung" der Situation im Irak.

Die historischen Grabungen sind in mehrerer Hinsicht für die Entwicklung des Irak wichtig - zur Erhaltung des Kulturerbes ebenso wie als Zukunftsperspektive für junge AkademikerInnen.


Die Instandsetzung des Grabungsgeländes (Reparatur der Forschungsgebäude und der elektrischen Anlage inkl. Generatoren, Sanierung der Wasserpumpanlage), die Gegenstand des vorliegenden Projektes ist, bietet zudem Unterstützung für die Bevölkerung der drei umliegenden Dörfer: Bauarbeiter und Handwerker finden an der Baustelle Beschäftigung, außerdem können Wasserpumpanlage und Stromgenerator des Grabungsgeländes von DorfbewohnerInnen mitbenutzt werden.
