Namibia Flood Relief Assistance 2008

Contract partner: ÖRK - Österreichisches Rotes Kreuz Country: Namibia Funding amount: € 100.000,00 Project start: 01.02.2008 End: 31.07.2008

Short Description:

Overall goal

Heavy rains since December 2007 have led to severe flooding in various countries of Southern Africa. The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) issued an Emergency Appeal in January 2008, revised in February 2008, seeking EUR 7,131,363 to provide relief assistance to a total of approximately 30.000 households affected by the flooding in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe for a period of six months.

The floods have displaced thousand of families and made many homeless. Infrastructure such as roads and bridges have been damaged and in some areas communication disrupted. In addition, the flooding is also reported to threaten this year's harvest, with most of the population of the affected areas relying on subsistence farming.

In Namibia, heavy rains have resulted in localised flooding in the areas of Oshana, Ohangwena, Caprivi und Omusati. An estimated up to 4.800 families (up to 24,000 people) have been affected and are in need of shelter and other relief items and services. The heavy rains have also destroyed crop fields and displaced livestock.

The main focus of the relief operations is on basic distribution of food and non-food relief items and provision of shelter, water and sanitation and emergency health and care activities.

This contribution of the Austrian Development Cooperation to the IFRC Appeal will be used to support the relief assistance in Namibia.
