Operationalization of Deir Al Balah Seawater Desalination Plant
Short Description:
Overall goal
In response to the critical water situation in Palestine, the Austrian government funded the conception and construction of a seawater desalination plant in the Middle Area of the Gaza Strip. The plant was meant to fullfill the following criteria:
- to provide safe drinking water for the whole population of the Middle Area with treated drinking water and secured distribution up to final consumer even in remote areas;
- to follow an approach that simultaneously protects groundwater resources; and;
- to agree that PWA is the decision maker in all project phases including the organizational set up, the technical aspects, the safeguarding of the operation and ensuring the involvement and participation of users.
The Austrian desalination plant will now be integrated into the newly formed Municipal Coastal Water Utility (MCWU) as per Palestinian Water Law.
The aim of the project is to support the integration of the desalination plant into the MCWU. The operational objectives are thus:
1- Achieving full production capacity of the Austrian desalination plant as per plant design.
2- Maximize sale of the desalinated water via water shops, tankers, bulk distribution and resellers from the private sector.
