Projet Résilience et Sécurité Alimentaire - Plateau Central (RESA - Plateau Central)

Contract partner: MINEFID - Ministère de l’Économie, des Finances et du Développement (ehemals: MEF) Country: Burkina Faso Funding amount: € 1.000.000,00 Project start: 15.12.2017 End: 14.12.2021

Short Description:

Overall goal

The project reinforces food security in the Central Plateau region in Burkina Faso. Its main objective is to improve food security and sovereignty as well as the populations’ income in the region. To achieve this, it intends to strengthen resilience, particularly of women, young people (aged 15-34) and vulnerable people (including disabled and indigent persons through inclusion). It will contribute to increasing the coverage rate of cereal needs by 6%. It will also contribute to increasing the beneficiary population’s income (youth, women and vulnerable persons) by 4% on average.

Expected results

To achieve these results, RESA – Plateau Central supports the protection of the soil, the improvement of soil fertility, regeneration of vegetation, rainwater capture and its rational use. The techniques used will be simple to master by the beneficiaries and will be based on current practices in the area. To allow the beneficiaries, in particular women, to increase their income, the project will promote income generating activities by inclusive grants for the financing of equipment and infrastructure for the processing of agricultural products.

Target group / Beneficiaries

The direct beneficiaries are the farmers, in particular women and youth. About 6.000 beneficiaries (young people, women and vulnerable people) will improve their production capacities. The project will also promote income generating activities for about 500 beneficiaries. Trainings will be offered to strengthen the technical capacities of all beneficiaries including capacity building for about 1.300 beneficiaries (including 140 officials) . The total number of beneficiaries is about 7.800 and they will come from 20 municipalities and 566 villages. They are organized in 360 farmers´ associations. The area of intervention of the project covers the Plateau Central region that includes three provinces.

Activities

Interventions for the protection and restoration of soils and vegetation cover will be based on farmers` traditional knowledge while improving it.

Context

After the drought in the Sahel in 2011, several countries of the region declared a state of emergency in 2012 and asked for support by the international community. In Burkina Faso, about 3 million people were affected during this food crisis. This is why the Government of Burkina Faso in collaboration with the Austrian Development Agency started to develop this project.
