Contract partner: GNHC / RGoB - Gross National Happiness Commission - Royal Government of Bhutan Country: Bhutan Funding amount: € 90.000,00 Project start: 01.10.2008 End: 30.12.2009

Short Description:

Overall goal

The Rangjung Hydropower Plant is located in Eastern Bhutan, in Trashigang Dzongkhag. The Hydropower scheme consists of one power station with two 1.1 MW generator units. The plant was constructed with the assistance of the Austrian Development Cooperation and commissioned for operation in 1996.

Since 2003, the plant has been facing some challenges with supply and repair which were mostly solved with the assistance of project partners in India and with the visit of Mr. Wilfried Geppert (1360-01/2006), the original supplier of mechanical parts. Although both units are currently operational, some difficulties persist.

The main objective of this project is to assess the current situation at site followed by targeted training in maintenance and operation activities performed by one junior and one senior expert. The three-week hands-on training of eight operational and maintenance staff of the Rangjung Hydropower Plant will include all aspects of the operation and maintenance of the plant.

Upon completion of the project, the plant will be fully refurbished and shall operate at its full capacity, and eight members of maintenance and operation staff will have received training to avoid future unplanned shut-downs of the power plant.
