Short Description:

Overall goal

The project aims to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience of refugee and host community women, girls, men and boys to recover from the protracted Syrian crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic in Jordan (contribution to SDGs 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 17; EU GAP III 3.3).

Expected results

1.1. 600 vulnerable girls and boys from refugee and host communities access public formal education through conditional cash transfers (Cash for Education);

1.2. At least 750 caregivers and school staff are better equipped to support the academic and socio-emotional development of vulnerable girls and boys;

1.3. 450 girls and boys at risk of drop-out receive Learning Support Services (LSS) to bridge learning gaps and accelerate their learning recovery during and after the pandemic;

1.4. Capacity of 15 staff of implementing organisation to advance gender equality in programming is increased;

2.1. 1,600 girls, boys, and women and men identified with psychosocial support and mental health needs receive adequate gender-responsive support to improve their condition and knowledge on sexual and gender-based violence;

2.2. 1,300 vulnerable girls, boys, women and men receive primary healthcare support, including dental, ante- and post-natal care and vaccination checks;

3.1. 14 public schools have gender- and age-appropriate WASH facilities and are equipped for safe re-opening after Covid-19-related school closures;

3.2. Sexual and reproductive health rights and hygiene practices for girls and women are promoted in schools.

Target group / Beneficiaries

Overall, the project is directly targeting 8,100 unique beneficiaries (approx. 70% Syrians), out of which 7,150 are ? 18 years old, 67% of whom are female, and a minimum of 10% with disability. The stated number of beneficiaries is based on beneficiaries per offered services. Based on needs children and caregivers can benefit from multiple Services.

Target regions: Irbid, Mafraq, Zarqa, Amman

Activities

Cash for Education (CfE) - Conditional cash transfers; teachers training, L&N classes and awareness sessions; LSS classes for students; advance gender equality in programming; mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) activities; health activities (including access to health care/medical consultations and assistive devices); WASH activities in schools (including improvements to infrastructure and access to hygiene and Covid-19 preventive material).

Context

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the humanitarian situation for the refugees in Jordan has deteriorated significantly in the past year. A relatively constant United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)-registered number of more than 650,000 Syrian refugees currently live in Jordan. The Government of Jordan implemented a full national lockdown in response to the outbreak of Covid-19 in March 2020. Aside from being a health emergency, the Covid-19 outbreak and attempts at controlling the spread of the virus also sparked a socio-economic downturn which has disproportionally affected the health, wellbeing, and prospects of already disenfranchised persons – both globally and in Jordan. Through an approach that heeds the complexity of the various crises affecting the country, as well as the varying ways in which vulnerabilities of individual girls, boys, women and men intersect, Caritas Austria and Caritas Jordan present a project which addresses current health, WASH, and education needs on the full spectrum from relief to recovery and resilience-building.
