Projects
Restoring Food and Income Security of Flood Victims in Bosnia & Herzegovina
Short Description:
Overall goal
Historic flooding has affected 1,5 Mio people in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in May 2014. While the most urgent needs (food, health, water & sanitation ) of the people affected were covered within the first few weeks, the recovery of agriculture and livelihood remains an unmet need for a large number of people. The Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH recognized this and requested World Vision (WV) BiH to focus on this sector. While the overall flood response focuses largely on the hardest hit areas in the north-east of BiH, WV Austria together with its partner, World Vision BiH, aims to also target severly affected areas in the north-western and centeral parts of BiH.
The target group of this intervention are thus subsistence farmers in the following underserved regions:
• Majevica (municipalities of Kalesija, Sapna, Zvornik), in the north-east of BiH.
• Ozren (municipalities of Petrovo, Lukavac, Banovici), in the north-east of BiH.
• Vrbas (municipalities of Celinac, Kotor Varos, Banja Luka); in the north-west of BiH.
• Lasva (municipality of Kakanj), in the central part of BiH.
• Krivaja (municipality of Olovo), in the central part of BiH.
Of the above mentioned municipalities, six (Kalesija, Sapna, Lukavac, Banovici, Kakanj, Olovo) are in the Federation of BiH, while the other 5 (Zvornik, Petrovo, Celinac, Kotor Varos, Banja Luka) are in the Republika Srpska.
The aim of this project is thus to sustain the food and income security of a total of 1.760 flood-affected vulnerable farming households (around 6.160 individuals) through providing them will productive livestock as well as seeds and fertilizers to re-cultivate 625 ha of land. The results the project wants to achieve are:
- 1760 households are able to sustain themselves until the next harvest by having productive livestock.
- 1 760 households are enabled to re-cultivate their land.
- 1 760 households produce enough crops or vegetables to ensure a sustainable household food production.
