Stärkung von Resilienz und Ernährungssicherheit der ländlichen Bevölkerung in Burkina Faso

Contract partner: FAO - Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Country: Burkina Faso Funding amount: € 1.747.133,00 Project start: 01.12.2012 End: 30.03.2015

Short Description:

Overall goal

Project titel (french): Appui à la résilience des populations rurales affectées par la crise alimentaire à travers la construction de puits pastoraux et maraîchers, de forages et boulis.

The overall objective of the project is to improve food security and to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable households, in particular by ensuring their sustainable access to water resources for agro-pastoral production.

In 2011/12 Burkina Faso, as other Sahel countries, was hit by a crisis of food insecurity. The Northern and Western parts of the country were among the most affected. Although the food security pressures eased following the 2012 rainy season, the impact of high food prices and past years’ insufficient and imbalanced agricultural production rates has led to a tenuous living situation for many vulnerable households. This situation affects especially the poorest households among them single parent families, including women headed households, and the most vulnerable people, especially children and women. Vegetable production and livestock rearing are an effective way to cope with food shortages provided that water is available, notably during the dry season.

The project will be implemented by FAO in a technical partnership with the Ministries of Agriculture and Animal Resources in four regions: Boucle du Mouhoun, Nord, Centre Nord, Centre Ouest. 1900 farming families in rural areas will benefit from the construction of 66 wells and 7 rainwater retention basins for vegetable production, and 10 wells and 20 drilling wells for livestock use.
