Contract partner: WFP - World Food Programme Country: Burkina Faso Funding amount: € 363.750,00 Project start: 01.10.2022 End: 30.09.2025

Short Description:

Overall goal

Through this action, WFP will improve the resilience of vulnerable populations who are prone to shocks and to enable them to cope and meet their needs in a time of crisis. WFP will develop the urban food production potential, green value-chains (energy and waste), and income opportunities. The project will improve the food and nutrition security of IDPs and host communities in urban and peri-urban areas in Burkina Faso.

This project aims to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable and IDP households and food-insecure communities in targeted urban and peri-urban areas through an integrated multi-sectoral approach. It combines short-term with medium and long-term interventions, covering the immediate needs of beneficiaries, while building opportunities for the immediate future.

Expected results

The immediate food availability to the communities targeted by food assistance for the creation of assets and related activities such as the collection of biodegradable waste.

• The creation of economically profitable and sustainable value chains from waste.

• The increased resilience of beneficiaries thanks to the asset packages based on agricultural production potential adapted to urban and peri-urban contexts.

• The restoration of natural resources (water-soil-plant).

• The capacity strengthening of actors and beneficiaries for the sustainable management of the assets.

Target group / Beneficiaries

World Food Program (WFP) will provide assistance to vulnerable families in Burkina Faso, namely the Boucle du Mouhoun, Centre-Nord, Nord, Est, Centre-Est and Sahel regions.

WFP will assist over 10,500 beneficiaries (or 1,500 IDPs and vulnerable households) through this project.

Since 2016, WFP has forged long-standing operational relationships with several ministries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rearing; Ministry of Water and Hydraulics; Ministry of the Environment) in the scope of the implementation of the Integrated Resilience Programme in the four regions of Burkina Faso (Centre-Nord, Est, Nord and Sahel), as well as general food assistance in the regions of Boucle du Mouhoun and Centre-Est. In all six regions, extension services (Directions Régionales) are involved in the implementation of an integrated resilience package of activities. It also includes the Ministry of Health (e.g., for nutrition prevention and treatment, sensitization as part of the integrated resilience package) and the Ministry of Education (school meals programme).

Activities

The project will cover four components: Homestead and urban gardening; Sustainable energy solutions; Improving the immediate food and nutrition security of participants during the project timeline; Improved and diversified knowledge and skills.

Context

Under its Country Strategic Plan (CSP) for 2021-2023, WFP Burkina Faso aims, through its resilience activities, to strengthen the management of natural resources, improve the means of production and mitigate the effects of natural disasters, with the objective of an improved adaptation to climate change, and strengthened resilience of vulnerable communities and households. WFP also works to enable government and communities’ capacity to respond to these challenges, so they can better cope with natural disasters and other forms of shocks. WFP’s resilience activities are implemented under the CSP Strategic Outcomes 2, 3, 4, and 5.
