Support of operation "Winter Race": Emergency Shelter Assistance to Earthquake Affected Population in Pakistan

Contract partner: IOM - International Organization for Migration - Switzerland Country: Pakistan Funding amount: € 400.000,00 Project start: 01.11.2005 End: 30.04.2006

Short Description:

Overall goal

The South Asian earthquake has destroyed a majority of housings in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (AJK) and the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). With winter approaching and temperatures dropping below freezing point, the provision of shelter is one of the main priorities of the Pakistani government and the international community to ensure survival of earthquake victims over the winter. This project foresees the provision of emergency shelter assistance through distribution of self-help shelter kits to earthquake-affected populations, specifically targeting populations in higher elevations. IOM, in cooperation with local partners such as the International Federation of the Red Cross, the UN Joint Logistics Centre, the UN Humanitarian Air Service and the Pakistan military, will provide around 1380 families with material for refurbishment or reconstruction of winter-resistant housing, essential non-food-items for protection against the elements, as well as guidance and assistance in the set-up of emergency shelters.
