Support to Int'l Campaign to Ban Landmines 2009
Short Description:
Overall goal
The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) was formally launched in 1992 with three basic goals: a total ban on antipersonnel landmines, increased resources for mine action, and increased resources for survivor assistance. Since the Mine Ban Convention, or Mine Ban Treaty, entered into force in 1999, the ICBL has been advocating for universal adherence to and compliance with the Mine Ban Treaty. Austria, due to its longstanding political commitment to the Mine Ban Treaty, has been continuously supporting the ICBL.
Key aims of the ICBL in 2009 are:
- Ensuring the success of the Second Review Conference of the Mine Ban Treaty, scheduled to take place in Colombia in November 2009.
- Gathering more signatories to and ensuring a swift entry into force of the Cluster Munition Convention, signed in Oslo in 2008 by 95 states and ratified by 4.
- Maintaining the necessary level of awareness to ensure full implementation of the Mine Ban Treaty by States Parties.
