Short Description:

Overall goal

Out of the total grant of ¿ 500,000, 80% are being provided by the Austrian Development Cooperation (from the Foreign Disaster Aid Fund) and 20% (CHF 150,000) by the Government of Liechtenstein.

The aim of the project is to compensate those farmers who lost their properties - whether agricultural or livestock - during the floods on 25th and 26th May, 2009, precipitated by Cyclone Aila, in order to ensure their food security.

The assistance shall focus on the areas:

- damage to agricultural properties,

- damage to livestock and

- repair of some water supply/irrigation channels.

The damage occurred in 12 out of the total 20 Dzongkhags (districts) of Bhutan, primarily in areas of high altitude with severe climatic conditions and high poverty rates. Agriculture and livestock are the main livelihoods of the affected rural population.

This assistance will be carried out in the form of cash compensation for the crop damages and the loss of livestock to all affected rural farmers of those 12 Dzongkhags. Additionally, the assistance is also used to support the renovation of 32 irrigation channels and 2 water supply schemes.

The grant will be utilised as follows:

1. Cash grant compensation directly to the affected farmers for livestock and crop damages and

2. Cash grant to the Dzongkhags Administration for the renovation of irrigation channels and water supply schemes.
