Support to WFP's Food Assistance Operation in Haiti

Contract partner: WFP - World Food Programme Country: Haiti Funding amount: € 250.000,00 Project start: 01.04.2008 End: 30.06.2009

Short Description:

Overall goal

This project is part of the decision taken by the Austrian Government in April 2008 to support the international humanitarian response to the global food crisis which has been escalating in spring 2008.

As the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, with 76 % of the population living below the poverty line, Haiti is one of the countries hit particularly hard by the increase in food prices: food prices for staples such as rice, beans and fruit doubled in the past six month; one third of newborn babies are underweight due to malnutrition of mothers; and the recent 'explosion' of food prices caused violent food riots which resulted in at least five deaths and the fall of the Government of Haiti on 14 April 2008.

This ADC project contributes to WFP's regular two-year Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO) in Haiti (PRRO 10674.0). As part of this operation, WFP now aims to provide immediate humanitarian food assistance to the victims of the civil unrest which has shaken the country since early April.

The WFP operation is intended to target the most vulnerable populations in six of the country's ten departments. Individual components will focus through the country's health and education institutions on mother-and-child health, the nutritional status of most vulnerable groups, tracking and treating HIV-positive and tuberculosis patients, and school feeding.

The ADC contribution serves to support WFP in purchasing, transporting and distributing approximately 368 tons of Corn Soya Blend (CSB).
