Trongsa Towers (Taa Dzong) Renovation and Conversion to Museum - 2nd Addition
Short Description:
Overall goal
The Central Tower, the North Wing and North Tower will house the Museum, the South Wing and South Tower will house the Administration and the living/meditation Quarters for monks. The two temples will remain as is and open for worshippers and visitors alike. The general character and the appearance of the side wings and towers will be maintained as they were but will be renovated in their original form. Through the creation of the state of the art Museum, knowledge on the country's religious culture, as well as Trongsa's specific historic role in shaping the Bhutanese nation and monarchy will be offered. For this purpose Euro 1.352.322 has already been allocated and the works are proceeding quite smoothly. Due to the unexpected collapse of the Main Tower (Utse) and the necessity to completely demolish it and the decision to reconstruct the tower in its original form, additional funds of Nu. 5,000.000 (Euro 100.000) were provided to implement this work. The work in the reconstruction of the main Tower is also progressing well.
During the implementation it has become clear, that the buildings are very old not maintained and never renovated. Most of the walls and all the wood components and in very poor condition and a lot of adjustments/additional work has to be undertaken. The Project Management further anticipates that a lot of unforeseen adjustments/additional work will still emerge during the course of implementation. Besides, the project site is located on a steep hillside, away from the main road and in absence of an access road; all the construction material has to be carried manually to the site. This manual transportation has increased the labour costs substantially. An additional cost of Euro 450.000 is required to complete the project. It has been agreed that out of this total amount of Euro 450.000, an amount of Euro 100.000 will be contributed by the Royal Government of Bhutan.
