Krankenschwestern spielen eine wichtige Rolle in der Krankenversorgung in Kenia. Sie erreichen die meisten Kenianer, auch in den abgelegensten und ärmsten Gegenden. Es gibt schätzungsweise mehr als 30.000 Krankenschwestern in Kenia. Die meisten (über 26.000 oder 86 %) sind aber nicht ausreichend geschult und besitzen kein Diplom. Im Zuge der Kapazitätenausbildung schlägt die Regierung vor, ein registriertes Diplom einzuführen.

AMREF hat seit 40 Jahren Erfahrung in der Ausbildung von professionellem Gesundheitspersonal und ist bekannt für seine Pionierarbeit in den "Distance Learning"-Programmen. AMREF besitzt alle nötigen Fähigkeiten und technischen Hilfsmittel, um angelernte Krankenschwestern zu Diplomkrankenschwestern auszubilden.

Durch die aus dem Lehrgang erlernten Fähigkeiten sind die Krankenschwestern in der Lage, eigenständig zu arbeiten und Entscheidungen für Maßnahmen im medizinischen Bereich für die 80 % der am Land lebenden Bevölkerung zu treffen. Die Verantwortung der Ausbildung übernimmt das "Nursing Council of Kenia" bzw. das Gesundheitsministerium, das auch Krankenschwestern einstellt. Das "Nursing Counci"l kam auf AMREF zu, um diese Neuregelung zu implementieren.


Geplant ist die Ausbildung von 26.700 Krankenschwestern zu Diplomkrankenschwestern über Fernlehrkurse inkl. klinischer Praxis in Spitälern. Ein Teil der Krankenschwestern wird zusätzlich zu Trainerinnen für das "Distance Learning" Programm ausgebildet. Module für dieses Programm für Krankenpflege, Familiengesundheitsberatungen, Basisgesundheitswesen und spezielle Fachbereiche werden entwickelt und Zentren in allen Gesundheitstrainingsschulen eingerichtet. Technische Instrumente und unterstützende Beratung werden von AMREF angeboten.
