Den Großteil ihres Eiweiß- u. Kalorienbedarfs decken die Afar-Nomaden traditioneller Weise durch das Trinken von Kamel- und Kuhmilch ab. Vor allem für die Ernährung von Kindern und Kleinkindern stellt Milch das allerwichtigste Nahrungsmittel dar.


Aufgrund der globalen Klimaveränderung der letzten beiden Jahrzehnte kam und kommt es immer wieder vor, dass in der Afar-Region ganze Regenzeiten entweder verspätet eintreffen oder komplett ausbleiben. Große Dürre mit anschließenden Hungerkatastrophen aber auch Überschwemmungen mit enormer Zerstörungskraft treten immer häufiger auf. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass in einigen Bezirken der Afar-Region bereits mehr als 90% des ursprünglichen Viehbestandes diesen Klimaextremen zum Opfer gefallen sind.


Um diese schlechte Ernährungssituation der Afar-Nomaden langfristig verbessern zu können, muss in erster Linie die Ursache des Viehsterbens in Angriff genommen werden. Dies kann vor allem durch einen verbesserten Zugang zu Wasser gelingen, ebenso wie die Reduktion der unzumutbaren Arbeitslast der Frauen, die für die tägliche Wasserbeschaffung bis zu 10 Stunden aufwenden müssen und dadurch keine Zeit mehr zur Verfügung haben, um sich anderen wichtigen Dingen des Haushalts kümmern zu können.


Ziel des Projekts ist es daher, durch ein ausgedehntes "Cash for Work Programm" aber auch durch den Einsatz von schweren Maschinen insgesamt 10 verschiedenen Wasserspeicheranlagen unterschiedlichster Typen in den beiden Bezirken Uwa und Awra in der Zone 4 zu errichten und somit die Wassersituation für ca. 71.000 Menschen samt deren Ziegen-, Kuh- und Kamelherden wesentlich zu verbessern.
