Overall goal


Coverage levels for water and sanitation in Ethiopia are among the lowest in the world. According to official figures, 41.2 per cent of households have access to safe water, and 21.34 per cent of households have access to sanitation facilities. Almost three quarters of health problems in children and communicable diseases originate from the environment. Diarrhoeal disease alone accounts for 46 per cent of total under-five mortality (source: UNICEF, 2007).


Personal hygiene and sanitation practices in West Arsi Zone are poor, water is scarce and of poor quality. This situation causes Acute Watery Diarrhoea to remain a recurring problem in West Arsi. In 2006, an outbreak with more than 7.000 reported cases led to 50 deaths.


Goal of the Project is the reduction of water-born diseases and water and sanitation related problems for the population in Kebete Kebele (around 8.200 persons), Kofale woreda, West Arsi zone, Oromyia Region through:

- Access to safe water and rapid installation of sanitary facilities for faecal deposition by establishing 15 water points and equipping all target households with latrines.

- Training of 20 volunteers in "Community Based Health and First Aid" and 40 volunteers in "Participatory Health and Sanitation Transformation".

- Increased capacity of Ethiopian Red Cross Society branch in West Arsi

- Strengthened management and technical capacity will be reached through external and internal trainings/workshops/transfer of knowledge in managerial and technical aspects of development projects

- Improved infrastructural/logistical capacity will be achieved through expansion of the office structure, purchase of office furniture and technical equipment

- Improved financial capacity of the branch and sustainability will be reached by expansion of income-generating activities
