Overall goal

The situation in Syria is rapidly deteriorating and the humanitarian needs increasing. More than 1.9 Million Syrians have sought refuge in the neighbouring countries, amongst those around 700.000 alone in Lebanon and there around 240,000 in Bekaa, the eastern district of Lebanon. Almost a quarter of the Lebanese population are refugees, placing a heavy burden on the state and humanitarian actors assisting the refugees.

The needs of refugees cover a wide range of sectors, from water and sanitation, shelter, food, protection, health to winterization and others. Considering the multiple UN and (I)NGOs actors present in the area, the biggest challenge, next to obtaining the necessary amount of funding for supporting the fast growing number of refugees, is a coordinated response that covers all refugees and their most urgent needs.

Thus, the AutRC supports a winterization project of the Lebanese Red Cross that is fully coordinated with and complements a Red Cross-ECHO Consortium program that covers winterization and water, sanitation and hygiene needs, capacity development for the local partner, cash transfer for rental needs and support to vulnerable Lebanese host communities in the Bekaa region of Lebanon. As winter is approaching fast, the climate conditions pose a severe threat to refugees. Families, particularly those living in tents and informal shelters will be in need of winter non-food items, such as warm blankets, stoves and fuel. The proposed project will (i) distribute winterization packages (fuel voucher, blanket, heating stove, jerry can) and (ii) shelter improvements for 450 registered and unregistered refugee households, living in small informal tented settlements and in unfinished buildings, garages and apartments in urban host communities. Approximately 30% of the beneficiaries will be vulnerable Lebanese households.
