Derra ist ein abgelegener, 1.500 km2 grosser Distrikt im zerklüfteten Hochland von Äthiopien. MfM unterstützt die 160.000 Menschen in diesem Gebiet mit einem integrierten, ländlichen Entwicklungsprogramm, das alle Sektoren von Land- und Forstwirtschaft über Wasserversorgung, Frauenprogramme, Gesundheitsdienst, Kampf gegen schädliche Traditionen (wie z. B. Frauenbeschneidung oder Mädchenheirat) und HIV/AIDS, Weg- und Straßenbau und natürlich auch Ausbildung umfasst. Dem Programm steht ein Projektmanager vor, der von 92 Mitarbeitern unterstützt wird. Diese sind auf 6 Fachabteilungen verteilt: Agro-Ökologie, Wasserversorgung und Bauten, Frauenprogramm, Gesundheitswesen HIV/AIDS und Administration und Logistik.

Die Erfahrung in MfM Projektgebieten zeigt, dass durch den Bau von Schulen tatsächlich immer mehr Mädchen zur Schule gehen. Um diesen Trend weiterhin zu fördern, hat MfM sich entschlossen, dem Wunsch der Bevölkerung nach mehr Schulen nachzukommen und im nächsten Schuljahr 5 weitere Schulen in Derra zu bauen. Für die Lehrer/innen wurd durch den Bau von Lehrerwohnungen eine Motivation geschaffen, an diesen abgelegenen Orten zu bleiben und in einem hellen, ansprechenden und gut ausgerüsteten Schulhaus qualitativ besser zu unterrichten.
