2021-2022 Support to ICIMOD's Medium Term Action Plan for the Period 2018 - 2022
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
ICIMOD has three strategic impact areas namely i) reduced poverty, ii) enhanced resilience by reducing physical and social vulnerabilities and iii) enhanced ecosystem services.
The above strategic impacts are achieved through ICIMOD’s seven strategic results such as (i) widespread adoption of innovations, (ii) generation and use of relevant data and knowledge, (iii) gender equality and inclusive development, (iv) human and institutional capacity development, (v) science-based evidence and policies, (vi) regional cooperation on sustainable mountain development, and (vii) contributing to greater global attention on mountain issues.
Erwartete Ergebnisse
ICIMOD has identified six outputs that will define the success of ICIMOD’s work:
- 23.322 women and men will benefit from enhanced resilience to socioeconomic and environmental changes, including climate change.
- Improved transboundary cooperation will be demonstrated through 13 regional policies aiming in equitable livelihood benefits of the mountain ecosystem services.
- Policies, strategies, and development programmes of 4 Member Countries highly critical to water resources management and disaster risk reduction will be influenced through evidence from scientific research in the areas of river basins.
- Member Countries will use science based knowledge via 12 new PhDs on air quality, atmospheric processes and climate to shape policies for improved environment and human health.
- 20 programmes will significantly contribute to evidence-based decision making processes by governments, communities and individuals in the areas of environment, natural resources, and climate change.
- Enhanced collaboration among 10 universities and research alliances for sustainable development in the Hindu Kush Himalaya.
Zielgruppe
ICIMOD is an intergovernmental knowledge and learning centre and has a geographical focus of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region with eight Member Countries namely, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan.
Recent data shows that 240 million people live in the mountains and 1.9 billion people in the downstream of river basins are dependent on the ecosystem services arising from Hindu Kush Himalaya region. Direct beneficiaries from the pilot and show-case sites for the Medium-Term Action Plan-IV period is at least 35,000, and direct beneficiary institutions at national and sub-national levels from eight Member Countries for the next five years are at least 155.
Maßnahmen
ICIMOD believes that integrated and transdisciplinary work is required to address complex mountain issues. ICIMOD has identified six regional programmes that are aimed at achieving the strategic seven results.
- Adaptation and Resilience to enhance the resilience of mountain communities to harness opportunities arising from socioeconomic and environmental changes.
- Transboundary Landscapes’ management vital for sustainable and equitable development in the upstream-downstream context.
- Sound management of River Basins and Cryosphere for promoting a sensible balance of competing demands on the environment from different sectors of society.
- Atmosphere focusing on improving the well-being of Hindu Kush Himalaya populations through better air quality and an improved understanding of atmospheric issues
- Mountain Environment Regional Information System with synergies of geospatial technologies and information technology for using, generating and disseminating information.
- Mountain Knowledge and Action Networks are significant for sustainable development in the Hindu Kush Himalaya with academia and researchers playing a critical role.
Hintergrundinformation
Rapid change in mountain societies and ecosystems, such as globalization, migration, urbanization, and climate change, sets the backdrop for ICIMOD’s future work. While challenging, this change also brings new opportunities for mountains and people. Solutions at the nexus of livelihoods and environment are urgently needed to adapt to change, to support transformative change and to build socio-ecological resilience for the benefit of mountain livelihoods, downstream people dependent on mountain resources, and overall sustainable mountain development.
ICIMOD’s key role as a regional organization is to work across boundaries. ICIMOD shares knowledge across borders about common mountain problems and helps mountain communities to address transboundary environmental issues like climate change and disasters. This work is important to mitigate the possibility of conflicts at local and regional scales. Regional cooperation will lead to better development outcomes, including peace and harmony in the Hindu Kush Himalaya.
